What is microsurgery?
Microsurgery is surgery performed under the magnification of an operating microscope. During microsurgery, the tiniest structures in the human body can be seen in brilliant illumination and magnification. This allows some of the smallest blood vessels, nerves and tubes of the body that are far too small to manipulate under the naked eye, to be repaired with the aid of a double operating microscope fully controlled by the surgeon.
The help of a microscope is necessary to accurately place sutures (stitches) in the walls of blood vessels and nerve coverings. These blood vessels and nerves can then be rejoined or modified to establish or re-establish blood flow and nerve signal transmission to the brain. Minute instruments and equipment are necessary to perform the wide range of microsurgery techniques.
